PCI compliance 'crucial' in managing security risks2008-04-04Keeping on the right side of the rules regarding payment card industry compliance (PCI compliance) is important to maintain vendor security, a software expert says. Writing in his blog on ZDNet, Phil Wainewright noted that recurring billing meant keeping credit card information and left a vendor "exposed" to a security breach. Successful purchase transactions normally lead to a purging of credit card details soon after credit card processing is completed. He pointed readers towards the blog of Braintree Payment Solutions chief executive Bryan Johnson, where a recent entry detailed how vendors can be PCI compliant. Mr Johnson's blog also issues warnings about how hackers can use stored information and how vendors can minimize risks. Mr Wainewright said however companies chose to do this was dependent on a range of factors: "Whether you want metering, billing, invoice handling, payment processing or fraud management, there's a solution out there for you". Some 127 million personal records were breached during security raids on businesses in 2007, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center. ![]() ![]() |
